What is Artificial Intelligence? Making Search Smarter
What is artificial intelligence (AI)? The concept of AI has been around for so long that most of us have a good high-level understanding of just what artificial intelligence is: it’s the technology that makes it possible for computers to act and react like humans. And most of us also understand that AI is becoming more and more intelligent, and seemingly less and less artificial. Yesterday, it was Amazon suggesting books we might like. Today it’s Alexa answering our trivia questions and turning the thermostat down. Tomorrow it will be driverless Ubers finding the quickest way to get us to wherever we need to go.
All of these examples of AI use search technology to understand what we’re looking for and to find the answers we need. What’s underlying the ability to conduct intelligent search are a number of key technologies – natural language processing (NLP), text analytics, and machine learning (ML) among them. These are concepts that are increasingly finding their way into the conversation – just as AI did a couple of decades back. They’re very complex concepts, and the differences among them can be very nuanced. Yet just as it’s helpful to have a solid high-level understanding of AI, it’s becoming useful to have the same level of understanding of what these technologies are used for.
To this end, we’ve put together a document that helps explain what is artificial intelligence, focusing on the technologies that are making their way into the conversation.
This 5-minute guide, Making Search Intelligent with AI, focuses on enterprise search, which makes content like databases, intranets, document repositories intelligently searchable. It includes a definition NLP, text analytics, and ML, and provides a non-techie example that shows why these technologies matter.
When it comes to AI technology, there’s no need to become an expert – that’s what the experts are for! But we’re hoping that this document will arm you with the information you need to understand just what’s making AI more intelligent.
