Document solutions manage what we generally call files: Word, Excel, anything stored in a file server. The source of the information is typically a file management system.
Document and Records Management Systems (DMS, RMS)
Sources: Documents (Word, pdf, Excel, etc.), version history, security (ACLs)
Actions focus on the mechanics of the DMS or RMS, such as workflow process control (e.g. move to archive) or general change management (e.g. document updates).
Storage and Archiving
Sources: Files of any type stored in a file system (e.g. NTFS, SAN NAS), file metadata, version history, security (ACLs), directories
Possible actions include updating directory content (e.g. move, delete), managing version control, updating file properties (e.g. read, write, adding discovered entities to documents), usage notification (e.g. account full, system traffic, department allocation), and archiving policy notification (e.g. move to tape storage).
