Are you getting all you can out of your corporate data? What does it cost you? How about your corporate content (email, documents, media, etc.)? Good business is conducted when you get the right information to the right person at the right time. It starts with having access to all your information and it succeeds when you can use the information to drive business processes when they happen. If you embrace only one of these ideas, you have less than half the solution.
Attivio AIE (Active Intelligence Engine) is the only system that does both. It "mashes up" Enterprise Search and Business Intelligence technologies in such a way that it allows for a deeper and more meaningful integration of information assets to promote good business. It integrates data and content into one universal repository - "intelligence" - and then because it is a real time engine, it lets you tie your assets directly to your corporate processes (applications, polices, decision flow, etc.) - "active intelligence".
Intelligent
Even the most aggressive and disciplined enterprises have at least two silos of information: one for structured data (e.g. mainframe data, databases, corporate applications), commonly referred to as the BIDW stack (business intelligence and data warehousing), and the other for unstructured content (e.g. documents, web pages, email, media), which includes enterprise search, CMS, DMS, and RMS (content/document/records management systems). We have lived with the challenge of having to choose between the precision of databases and the richness of search for a long time, but no longer.
Attivio AIE integrates both structured data and unstructured content into a single universal repository, without compromising the richness of either, so you have intelligent access to all your company's information. It then brings together the analysis, visualization, reporting, and other services on top of the repository that make it useful. With analysis, you have both data mining and text mining working together. With visualization and reporting, you have the precision of SQL and business intelligence and the fuzziness of search working together.
| What do you get? |
What does it mean for you? |
| • Connectivity: large library of connectors for converting data and content from their native formats (e.g. databases, email, Microsoft Office, pdf, etc.) |
•Any data or content you need to query for your application, we get it there |
| • Our own database connector for better performance (e.g. JOINs handled in AIE, not through SQL query to database) |
• No more "killer queries"
• Database no longer the bottleneck |
| • Custom built Office and pdf connectors for text mining deeper than conventionally available |
• Deepest insight into the data and content you may care about most: Office, pdf
|
• Full query support (parametric, +/- style, Boolean, proximity, natural language, etc.)
• Advanced relevancy model that incorporates facet analysis in the corpus calculation |
• Great relevancy, great results
|
• Automatic, on-the-fly facet creation (e.g. search for 'laptop' creates facets 'CPU', 'screen size', 'weight'; search for 'server' creates 'CPU', 'memory', 'number of rack units')
• You can create your own as well |
• More relevant results based on the content |
| • Preset user configurations, or profiles, that optimally pre-configure the system |
• You can create your own as well
• Good out-of-the-box relevancy
• More personal experience for each class of user |
Active
Information by itself is not an asset; you have to do something with it to make it useful. AIE lets you trigger an event or action based on the results of a query or anywhere in the workflow logic you use to ingest data and content. This event or action could be a call through any one of over forty communication transport protocols (e.g. HTTP, FTP, SMTP, email) as a notification to another person or active dashboard, or as a trigger to do something in an application. Or it could simply be a response to someone's question online.
This is what makes the information active, but to truly make it useful it must create its action within the context of the relevant corporate process, not after the fact when it is too late to respond other than for historical analysis. This is a singular problem for business intelligence because it is architected for a batch environment. AIE, however, is a real-time system with real-time processing, so the latency is minimal, and you get the answer in time to react or respond immediately.
| What do you get? |
What does it mean for you? |
| • Ability to save queries as alerts and tie results directly to actions and events (e.g. notification via email, SMS or IM; SQL write to a database) |
• Your data and content are actively connected with their environment
• Any change, you know about it immediately
|
| • Workflow-based processing of complex content (e.g. email attachments, ZIP files), queries, and results; supports conditional branching, loops, parallel logic, calls to external systems, event triggering |
• Virtually any type of complex logic for ingesting data and content or managing queries, results, and alerts can be supported through the same workflow environment
|
| • Multi-channel: library of communication transport protocols for ingesting content and processing queries and results; includes AS400, EJB, email, File, FTP, HTTP, IMAP, JDBC, Pop3, JMS/ActiveMQ, Multicast, Quartz, Servlet, RMI, Stream, SMTP, SOAP, SSL, TCP, UDP, VFS, VM, WSDL, and Xmpp |
• Greater interaction with the surrounding environment (e.g. document ingestion through FTP, queries through SMS, results through email, events through SMTP) |
Easy and Powerful
The best solution in the world won't work if you can’t use it. Attivio has gone to great lengths to ensure an accessible, efficient, easy to use, secure system. In fact, soon you will be able to download it from this site. But many software products are easy to use. The difference is they usually sacrifice functionality and flexibility to get there. AIE does not.

What does it mean for you? |
| • All functionality accessible through Developer FIRST™ API, designed by engineers for engineers, with complete SDK, task-oriented documentation, customer extranet, sample front-end code and integration logic |
• Up and running faster because you're more efficient and you have a shorter learning curve |
• Multi-lingual: index, sort, and search content in most any language, including complex languages such as Japanese and Chinese
|
• Greater customer reach and flexibility
• Global implementations |
| • Multi-platform: written entirely in Java and contained within a single instance |
• No platform restrictions (supports any platform that runs Java) • Easy to install because there is only one instance to contend with
|
• Multi-tenant: host several customers in a single instance or in separate instances
|
• You can offer your application as a service and host it yourself (SaaS) |
| • Fault tolerance, high availability, multiple masters, full access control with last-second “live” checks against security authorities (AD or LDAP) |
• Your application will never lose data • Your information is secure |
| • Core footprint < 10MB•Index size typically 20-40% of source data•True incremental indexing (add hardware as your index expands without re-indexing) |
• Your customers begin with a lower setup cost and aren't overwhelmed by the size of their search index as it grows |
