Attivio Launching Active Intelligence Engine – Announces First Customer

January 22, 2008 Company Release

Unique Mash-Up of Operational BI & Enterprise Search to Provide a Universal Repository for Injecting Information into Key Business Processes

NEWTON, MA – (January 22, 2008) – Ali I. Riaz, former President and COO of FAST Search and Transfer, today announced the launch of a new software venture, Attivio, Inc., which will offer the industry's first true Active Intelligence Engine (AIE). AIE is a universal repository for injecting information into key business processes, weaving data, content, and applications together for a variety of uses such as ecommerce, eDiscovery, and operational business intelligence. Its main innovations are integrating structured data and unstructured content into one repository without compromising the richness of either, and using the information to automatically update, manage, and enrich business systems.

"Until now, companies have always had to support two very dissimilar technologies that really do the same thing," said Riaz, Attivio's Chief Executive Officer. "Business intelligence provides precise answers that help drive business; enterprise search extracts meaning and context to improve decision making. The words may be different, but the underlying messages sound the same to me. So we decided to build an engine that takes the best ideas from each technology and integrates them. This is the 'intelligence' in active intelligence. We also realized that for information to be truly useful, it has to cause something to happen, for example notify someone, direct an application, or move to the next step in a process. So we added to the engine the ability to tie your information directly to actions in real time. This is the 'active' in active intelligence."

The way Riaz sees it, we are beginning the next chapter in the evolution of information, from creating to finding, and now with Attivio, to using information. “Finding doesn't always require searching”, says Sue Aldrich, Senior Vice President and Senior Consultant at the Patricia Seybold Group. “Bring users the information before they need it, or surround them with the information they need so they have only to accept it when they are ready for it.”

Riaz also announced that Boldfacers, an online media company featuring Boston movers and shakers, as well as events and an insider’s guide to the city, has selected Attivio AIE for the next major version of its boldfacers.com site. According to founder, Lisa Pierpont, “we selected Attivio because we were looking for a partner who could deliver more than just search. Attivio provides us with a key active intelligence component that will vastly improve the user experience on our site. They bring a wealth of knowledge and innovation, and have been great to work with.” The new site will debut very soon.

Attivio was founded by a team of senior engineers and business people who bring a considerable amount of expertise in business intelligence, data warehousing, enterprise search, and transaction processing. They draw their experience from companies such as CSC, Sybase, Ab Initio, Hummingbird, FAST, AltaVista, Akamai, Northern Light, Dragon, LingoMotors, eScription, Quantum Bridge, Tessera, Everypoint, Liberty Mutual, Fidelity Investments, John Hancock, MIT, IDC, and Yankee Group. “We are committed to tread new paths, work honestly and intimately with our clients and align with the best technology and business partners”, concludes Riaz.

About Attivio
We are an enterprise software company operating in the information fabric/infrastructure market. We deliver the Active Intelligence Engine (AIE), a universal repository for injecting information into key business processes. It weaves data, content, and applications together for a variety of uses such as ecommerce, eDiscovery, and operational business intelligence. The engine is easy to install, always downloadable, linearly scalable, and perfect for both custom solutions and application embedding. Our main innovations are integrating structured data and unstructured content into a single universal repository and using the information to automatically update, manage, and enrich business systems.

Our strategy is mashing up technologies for today's collaborative world where online presence, multi-channel alignment, and end-to-end integration are critical factors. We believe that search results from unstructured content or query results from structured data alone always sub-optimize the business process. By delivering answers based on all corporate information to the right person at the right time, we drive the shift from finding information to using information and help companies conduct better business.
