An international trading firm wants to analyze a high volume of complex financial over-the-counter trade data in seconds rather than days as it typically takes.
Without Attivio
This is a project lasting over a year that will require significant infrastructure updates. First, they construct a data warehouse to collect the trade data as it comes in and a business intelligence interface to slice and dice the information. In both cases they spend an inordinate amount of effort and time to make the system real-time. They also realize they need to connect their analytics engine into this system as well. And finally, they complete the project by building a simple-to-use portal for their traders.
…and it doesn't run fast enough. To fix the problem they upgrade all the hardware. It's at this time one of the traders realizes they could gain much better insight if they mined their emails that go back and forth amongst them, and also key RSS feeds from pertinent journals to get a clue as to what is being said about their accounts.
With Attivio
The project is straightforward with Attivio AIE installed as their operational business intelligence system and warehouse. It’s real-time out of the box, so there is no need to upgrade the hardware. Their analytics engine plugs in nicely to the workflow models they built and they realize it's easier to integrate a simple reporting tool with AIE (along with the portal) and let AIE do the slicing and dicing. No BI needed.
Next, they add in the relevant unstructured content, their email and assessment reports from inside the company, and various news feeds, journals, and research content sources from their industry. To make it useful, they apply sentiment analysis to some of the newspapers and journals and set alarms any time volume changes drastically and sentiment shifts significantly in either direction. By integrating real-time trade data with market news and worldly events, not only can they see what their trade data is doing in real time, they also get a sense as to what might be influencing fluctuations.
Their exploratory interest now piqued, they expand their system. They turn on automatic facet generation and by examining their data at the intersection of facet and analytical result, they find new performance patterns. Since the system performs so well, they add more complex models to their analytics, which in turn bring more insight. They also expand the alerting capabilities, adding SMS for their mobile staff and pushing content to their operational applications (e.g. CRM, financial system).
